MICRO BIONIC: Radical Electronic Music & Sound Art in the 21st Century

MICRO BIONIC: Radical Electronic Music & Sound Art in the 21st Century

By Thomas Bey William Bailey

MICRO BIONIC is an exciting survey of electronic music and sound art from cultural critic and mixed-media artist Thomas Bey William Bailey - first published in late 2009 - This new edition includes all of the original supplements refused by the publishers of the first edition, including a full index, bibliography, additional notes and  commentary with a large updated discography.

As the title suggests, the unifying theme of the book is that of musicians and sound artists taking bold leaps forward in spite of (or sometimes because of) their financial, technological, and social restrictions. Some symptoms of this condition include the gigantic discography amassed by the one-man project Merzbow, the drama of silence enacted by Onkyo and New Berlin Minimalism, the annihilating noise transmitted from the laptop computers of Russell Haswell and Peter Rehberg and much more.

Although the journey begins in the Industrial 1980s, in order to trace how the innovations of that period have gained greater currency in the present, it surveys a wide array of artists breaking ground in the 21st century with radical attitudes and techniques. A healthy amount of global travel and concentrated listening have combined to make this a sophisticated yet accessible document, unafraid to explore both the transgressive extremes of this culture and the more deftly concealed interstices thereof. Part historical document, part survival manual for the marginalized electronic musician, part sociological investigation, Micro Bionic is a number of different things, and as such will likely generate a variety of reactions from inspiration to offense...

Numerous exclusive interviews with leading lights in the field were conducted for this book: William Bennett (Whitehouse), Peter Christopherson (r.i.p., Throbbing Gristle / Coil), Peter Rehberg, John Duncan, Francisco López, Carl Michael von Hausswolff, Bob Ostertag, Zbigniew Karkowski and many others weigh in with a diversity of thoughts and opinions that underscore the incredible diversity to be found within new electronic music.

LORDS OF THE LEFT-HAND PATH: From the Cult of Set to the Church of Satan - by Stephen E. Flowers

LORDS OF THE LEFT-HAND PATH: From the Cult of Set to the Church of Satan

By Stephen E. Flowers, Ph. D.

'Terminus Viae'

The Left-Hand Path is the way of the HERO....
The path of those who, having understood their own individual divinities, would dare to breach the gates of eternity and eat of the tree of life eternal - to stand against the inertia and ignorance of the whole universe, to strive against that which would thwart all intelligence and life and to prevail against it - THIS is the aim of the Sinister Path.....

From black magic and Satanism to Gnostic sects and Gurdjieff’s Fourth Way, the left-hand path has been linked to many practices, cults, and individuals across the ages. Stephen Flowers, Ph.D., examines the methods, teachings, and historical role of the left-hand path, from its origins in Indian tantric philosophy to its underlying influence in current world affairs, and reveals which philosophers, magicians, and occult figures throughout history can truly be called “Lords of the Left-Hand Path.”

Flowers explains that while the right-hand path seeks union with and thus dependence on God, the left-hand path seeks a “higher law” based on knowledge and power. It is the way of self-empowerment and true freedom. Beginning with ancient Hindu and Buddhist sects and moving Westward, he examines many alleged left-hand path groups, including the Cult of Set, the Yezidi Devil Worshippers, the Assassins, the Neoplatonists, the Hell-Fire Club, the Bolsheviks, the Occult Nazis, and several heretical Sufi, Zoroastrian, Christian, and Muslim sects. Following a carefully crafted definition of a true adherent of the left-hand path based on two main principles--self-deification and challenge to the conventions of “good” and “evil".

The author analyzes many famous and infamous personalities, including H. P. Blavatsky, Faust, the Marquis de Sade, Austin Osman Spare, Aleister Crowley, Gerald Gardner, Anton LaVey, and Michael Aquino, and reveals which occult masters were Lords of the Left-Hand Path. Flowers shows that the left-hand path is not inherently evil but part of our heritage and our deep-seated desire to be free, independent, and in control of our destinies.

THE CARNIVALS OF LIFE & DEATH: My Profane Youth 1913-1935 - By James Shelby Downard

THE CARNIVALS OF LIFE and DEATH

My Profane Youth 1913-1935

By James Shelby Downard

“The most absurd, the most incredible, the most ridiculous Illuminati theory of them all.”
— Robert Anton Wilson, author of The Illuminatus! Trilogy

James Shelby Downard is without doubt one of the most controversial conspiracy theorists of the 20th century -- In his essay “ King-Kill 33° ” Downard has notoriously laid out the involvement of Freemasonry in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy -- 'The Carnivals of Life and Death' is Downard’s autobiographical account of his early years in the deep South, when Ku Klux Klansmen and Freemasons, pulled him into many strange and violent affairs.

Downard does furious battle with both factions and many others. 'Hoodwinked' and set up time and time again, he narrowly escapes numerous attempts on his life. All the while the continuous message of importance seems to be 'nothing is as it seems'.

Adam Parfrey, who introduced Downard to readers in his Apocalypse Culture book compilations, provides the Foreword, based on his personal experiences with the reclusive and now-deceased conspiracy theorist. A real roller-coaster ride of a read !

"Because the dead and deadening scenery of the American city of dreadful night is so utterly devoid of mystery, so thoroughly flat-footed, sterile and infantile, so burdened with the illusory gloss of  'baseball-hot dogs-apple pie and Chevrolet'  that it is somehow outside the psycho-sexual domain. The eternal pagan psychodrama is escalated under these 'modern' conditions precisely because sorcery is not what twentieth century man can accept as real."  --- James Shelby Downard from his essay: " King Kill 33* "

UNOFFICIAL RELEASE: Self Released and Handmade Audio in Post-Industrial Society

UNOFFICIAL RELEASE: Self Released and Handmade Audio in Post-Industrial Society

By Thomas Bey William Bailey

Featuring Material on: Mail Art, Cassette Culture, Industrial Music, Handmade Packaging, Releasing Addiction, Extremist Metal, Digital File Sharing, Outsider Art, etc..

From the web-site:

The culture of self-released music and sound art is one of the most vital, yet most overlooked, phenomena resulting from the 20th century revolution in communications technology. In this volume, Thomas Bailey surveys a fascinating realm of creative activity and identifies the key individuals and developments responsible for its continued relevance in the present age.

From the networked “mail art” of the 1970s, to the home-taping boom, to the establishment of music labels dealing solely in digital sound files, this culture provides valuable insight into the evolution of the “official” art market and the artists who bypass it.

Along the way, we are introduced to a world where networks are artworks in themselves, where blank tapes and recordable CDs are fashioned into elaborate art objects, and where relative freedom from creative supervision leads to both colorful innovations and violent aesthetic extremes.

Exclusive long-form interviews are also included with artists such as: Frans de Waard, Vittore Baroni, Rod Summers, GX Jupitter-Larsen and others, along with new insights from theorists and artists as varied as 'Gen' Ken Montgomery, The Tapeworm, Alexei Monroe, Oren Ambarchi, and David Tibet. Also includes front and back cover photography courtesy of Scott Konzelmann / Chop Shop.
